Screwtape counsels Wormwood to the Patient how humble he has become. Wormwood must not let the Patient realize that the images he has of spirituality are stereotypes. He transforms, at one point in the story, into a giant centipede. Were Screwtape to stand trial, it is easy to imagine him making this same argument, but Screwtape is not a smoothly functioning cog. These friends, however, are not Christians.

He is at once affectionate toward, and overly critical of, his nephew Wormwood. But are you not being a trifle naif? Screwtape advises Wormwood to make the Patient a hypocrite. I showed him a newsboy shouting the midday paper, and a No. If I had lost my head and begun to attempt a defence by argument I should have been undone. Inspired, the author worked at breakneck speed, frequently knocking out an entire letter in one sit-down session.
